Exploring What’s Working: Conversations on Student-Success Initiative Impact in Community Colleges

Thursday, February 21 from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

ROOM: Seaside 7

This session will present high-level analysis of more than 1,100 impact studies across community college and universities undertaking student success innovations, from advising reform to flipped classes to tutoring centers. In addition, we’ll take a deeper dive on community-college specific studies and the variation in what’s working and what’s not necessarily moving the needle. We’ll have a panel of presidents and senior student success leaders react to and reflect on the data in real time, catalyzing conversations about how we best optimize the mix of student success initiatives launching or scaling in the Achieving the Dream community.

Speakers: Mark Milliron, Karen Stout, Marica Ballinger, Jamie Posey, Michael Gutierrez

Why Early Alerts, Flagging and Best Practices Aren’t Enough

Wednesday, February 20 from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

ROOM: 202 C

As higher education searches for solutions to its biggest challenges, leaders are often in search of universal student success truths to improve student outcomes. Standardized tests predict college success. Low GPA students are the most at-risk. Students who are near to graduation aren't facing barriers to completion. Full-time study is right for everyone. While well-intended practices emerge from these beliefs, stagnating success outcomes across the country suggest a more nuanced understanding is needed. This session will explore the surprising realities behind higher education's "campfire wisdom" and take a closer look at what the data really tell us about our students, policies and programs - and what higher ed is doing about it. We’ll dive into what we’re learning from the data and each other to measurably -- sustainably -- improve outcomes for our students and institutions.

Speaker: Matthew Milliron
